Memories – Faculty – Marianna Brittain Baughan
Here’s what we remember about Mrs. Baughan
From SchoolGirl57:
I remember how mean she was to me to begin with when she thought I was disrespecting her class and how nice she was to me later – in fact, it was Mrs. Baughan who gave me the best advice I ever got about boys.
I remember how she mercilessly – and somewhat unfairly – teased the athletes because she thought they got by too easily in other classes.
I remember her tests with the bonus section. If you had any doubt about how well you’d answered the other questions, you could always plough ahead and do the “extras” in the hope this would improve your grade.
I especially remember how she complained about the military disability pay that some male relative (brother?, brother-in-law?) had drawn since WWII due to an injury he’d sustained on a SKI SLOPE during the postwar period of European occupation. She thought that was disgraceful.
But most of all, I remember how she – along with Nina Johnston – literally changed my life by making sure I was exposed to a lot of scholarship opportunities. I probably wouldn’t have gone to college if it hadn’t been for them. I suspect she was more of a marshmallow than the intimidating gorgon I sometimes took her for at the time.
From SmartiePants
She was scary, but she leveled out how a lot of teachers treated the jocks. Especially the football players, making them whirl around the room like ballet dancers when they came to class late. It was funny because she was so little and they were so big.
From gmac0923
Beneath her tough exterior was a kind and caring person. If you really tried, you had nothing to fear.
