How Do I Get a Library Card?

Register for a Jefferson County Library Card Online or register in person at any public library in Jefferson County. There is no charge for your card.

To register as an Adult you will need:

  • A photograph of a government-issued photo ID.
  • If your photo ID doesn't contain your current address, include a photograph of a bill/mail with your name and address.

To register for a Minor you will need:

  • If you are age 18 or under, you and your parent will need to come in to a library to apply for a library card.
  • If Parent's/Guardian's photo ID doesn't contain their current address, include a photograph of a bill/mail with their name and address.

Non-Residents of Jefferson County are required to pay an annual fee of $50.00 before account will be activated. Residents of Hoover within Shelby County are exempt from this fee. College students living on campus within Jefferson County must include a photo ID and proof of their residency on campus.

 College students living off campus within Jefferson county must include a photo ID and proof of their current residence off campus. No fee is required. You will receive a library card and may use it the same day. If you live outside Jefferson County, there is an annual fee of $50. Some municipal libraries may have different policies. Children under the age of 15 must have a parent or legal guardian sign the responsibility statement on the application.

Checkout Periods

Books, paperbacks, music recordings, and audio books check out for 3 weeks and most can be renewed once for an additional 3 weeks. Fiction and non-fiction videos (movies) check out for 7 days and can be renewed once for an additional 7 days. Framed art work (located in the Arts/Literature/Sports Department) checks out for 2 months and can be renewed once for an additional 2 months.
