Monthly Event
Bards & Brews is a poetry performance/beer tasting event hosted by the Birmingham Public Library.
It is usually held on the first Friday of each month except December. Slams are held quarterly in January, April, July, and October; the other sessions are open mic. The event is emceed by performance artist and poetry events director Voice Porter. Live musical performances are held before the poetry performances begin. Craft beer is donated by breweries from around the region.
Annual Events
Local Authors Expo showcases Alabama authors, including many from the Birmingham area. Authors discuss their work, sell and autograph books, and talk about their writing process.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Lecture: Begin The Day - Each January since 2004, the Birmingham Public Library Archives sponsors an annual lecture or performance honoring the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. and examining topics relating to human rights.
