JOB OPENING
MAINTENANCE REPAIR WORKER – FULL TIME
MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT – CENTRAL LIBRARY
OPENS: 1/15/2025 CLOSES: 1/31/2025

 
DESCRIPTION
This job involves skills in performing a variety of specialized tasks in operating and maintenance repair work in all 18 locations of the library system.  It can be physically demanding work and is occasionally hazardous.  It requires knowledge of buildings and equipment maintenance so that valid assessments can be made of what work must be done and how; the priority level for that work; and whether or not the work should be delegated to Facility Services of the City of Birmingham, or to a contracted vendor. Works in all buildings of the Birmingham Public Library under the supervision and direction of the Head of Maintenance.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK
  • Reports to the Head of Maintenance.
  • Maintaining and making adjustments in heating and air conditioning equipment, temperature control equipment and thermostats.
  • Logging temperatures, pressures and other performance readings.
  • Assisting Facility Services with maintenance and repairs of library equipment.
  • Stays current on new equipment maintenance and/or work procedures.
  • Troubleshooting electrical plugs and outlets, wiring, plumbing leaks, power failures, appliances, audio visual equipment, furnishings and other equipment.
  • Repairing electrical wiring and switches.
  • Installing wiring and cabling for automated circulation system, local area network and security systems.
  • Performing minor plumbing repairs and cleanups involving sinks, commodes, urinals and their drains, valves and water lines.
  • Servicing, assembling, moving and repairing furnishings and fixtures such as: chairs, desks, workstations, bookshelves, book trucks, book drops and bins, lighting and light fixtures (interior and exterior), communications equipment, security gates, doors and door closers, microwave ovens, trash compactors, vacuum cleaners, icemakers, screens and other audio visual equipment; replacing ballasts for florescent light fixtures. 
  • Replacing a variety of lamps including, incandescent, florescent, compact florescent and cold cathode.
  • Making routine inspections of roofs, gutters, windows and doors.
 DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
  • HVAC Certified preferred.
  • Certification as an apprentice electrician or plumber.
  • Knowledge and practice of good customer service skills and ability to establish cordial and effective relationships with associates and patrons.
  • Knowledge of, experience and skill with the tools and equipment used in repairing and maintaining heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Knowledge of, experience and skill with the tools and equipment used in installing and maintaining communications equipment and cabling.
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment of the building and mechanical trades.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the building trades and of necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of proper lifting techniques.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to safely use power tools.
  • Ability to see and discern parts, equipment, gauges, dials and tools in low light levels
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages and proportions using a calculator.
  • Ability to draw and to interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to safely use tools and/or equipment while climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling.
  • Skill in the use of general maintenance tools and equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical requirements include the ability to stand for long periods of time; eyesight sufficient to read and understand information from microforms and PC monitors, and the manual dexterity necessary for the regular use of PCs; ability to stoop, twist, turn and move materials from place to place in the library.  Ability to lift and move objects/materials weighing 50 to 100 pounds for long distances (greater than 200 feet).
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or GED, plus completion of a certificate program (building maintenance, electrician, plumber or air conditioning and refrigeration) from college or technical school or at least one year of on the job training and experience in electrical work, plumbing work or mechanical work, under the supervision of a journeyman or master tradesman.
A valid Alabama driver’s license and proof of current insurance.

  • 80 hours biweekly, Grade 17 - Salary range: $38,584.00 - $59,862.40 (starting salary is commensurate with education and experience)
